Client Profile

Brennan Innovations

A native of the Yukon, Joel Brennan of Brennan Innovations has been a lifelong athlete, representing Canada internationally in freestyle kayaking, and teaching stand up paddle boarding. It was in part due to his experience with paddle sports that led Joel to one day think – there has to be a better way!

For Joel, the better way he envisioned was a better land paddle; the SUP StickTM. But like many early-stage ventures, Joel and his company Brennan Innovations had two problems: how to bring his idea to fruition, and how to stop others from copying his idea. Luckily for Joel, both problems were solved with the assistance of Cold Climate Innovation. A collaboration between the Federal Government of Canada, the Government of the Yukon, and Yukon College, Cold Climate Innovation provides funding to early stage start-ups and individuals to research and develop their ideas, if they file for patent protection.

From nearly the beginning, Oyen Wiggs has been helping Joel and Brennan Innovations secure patent protection to obtain investment from Cold Climate Innovation, and to protect his invention. By leveraging a mix of provisional, PCT, and national phase patent applications, Oyen Wiggs has helped Brennan Innovations grow its patent portfolio while being sensitive to Joel’s requirements for certainty and timing of expenses. Oyen Wiggs and its lawyers are proud to partner with Joel and Brennan Innovations, and support them in their growth.
